TERTIARY BEGINS DRILL TESTING OF NORWEGIAN PLATINUM PROSPECT

  • Targeting Geophysical Anomaly Within 10km Long Ultramafic Intrusion
  • Part Of Spring Programme On Scandinavian Platinum/Copper-Nickel Projects

Tertiary Minerals plc has commenced a drilling programme to follow up a new discovery of platinum group elements (PGE) made during recent summer field programmes at its Finnmark project in Norway. This is one of a number of proposed drilling programmes to test for PGE and nickel-copper mineralisation on Tertiary’s Scandinavian projects over the next few months.

PGE mineralisation has previously been identified on Tertiary’s various claims in the Finnmark district including wide intervals of mineralisation intersected in drilling by the Norwegian Geological Survey at both Porsvann and Karenhaugen. The company notes, however, that this mineralisation is hosted by small intrusions and has limited tonnage potential. The current drilling target, by contrast, is hosted in a 10km long ultramafic intrusion which features a coincident geophysical anomaly extending along strike for several hundred metres.

This latest target was initially discovered in a small outcrop containing low-grade disseminated nickel and copper sulphide minerals in ultramafic rock which, in two grab samples, averaged 2.5g/t platinum-palladium-gold. Subsequent geophysical exploration identified a zone of anomalous conductivity associated with the PGE-bearing outcrop and extending along strike for some considerable distance.

Shallow drilling within this zone during the 1970s recorded low-grade nickel-copper sulphide mineralisation but the drill core was never assayed for PGEs. Tertiary therefore considers that the target conductive zone could indicate a more extensive zone of nickel-copper sulphide mineralisation which may carry PGE values.

The current drilling programme will comprise four holes, two of which will test the geophysical anomaly beneath the outcropping PGE mineralisation. The other two will test it 200m north of the outcrop and 700m to the south. The latter location is along strike and to the south of the holes drilled in the 1970s. Results are expected towards the end of May.
